Every child has a spark, a quiet brilliance waiting to be seen.
But in many rural schools across Namibia, academic achievement often goes unnoticed. Learners work hard under challenging conditions: studying by candlelight, walking long distances, sharing limited resources, or supporting their families before and after school.
Their dedication is extraordinary, yet recognition is rare.
This is the heart behind RONA’s Star Performer Award.
The Star Performer programme celebrates the resilience, commitment, and excellence of learners who rise above their circumstances to shine academically. What began as a small gesture has grown into a powerful movement of encouragement across schools in Kavango West and beyond.
🌟 Recognising Excellence Across Namibia
To date, RONA has celebrated 23 exceptional learners across three rural schools:
- Nkutu Primary School
- Kananana Combined School
- Otjondeka Primary School
Each award ceremony is filled with emotion, teachers clapping proudly, parents unable to hold back their smiles, and students overwhelmed by the simple joy of being seen.
Certificates, medals, stationery packs, and trophies may seem like small items, but to these learners, they are symbols of hope. For many, it is their very first award.
One teacher shared:
“This recognition changed the energy of the whole school. Learners study harder now because they see what is possible.”
🎓 The Scholarship That Changes Lives
Beyond awards, the programme also supports long-term success through the Star Performer Scholarship, given to an outstanding Grade 7 learner each year.
In 2023, the first scholarship recipient, Mario Simaru from Kavango West, began his secondary school journey with RONA’s support.
With mentorship, resources, and encouragement, he has continued to excel, a living example of what happens when a child’s potential is met with opportunity.
Mario often says:
“I want to make my community proud.”
And he is well on his way.
